Stephen Wright my bonkers neighbour in East Dulwich

Dismembered dolls, toothpaste tubes, false teeth, crockery, plastic cutlery, beads and glass eyeballs - right round the corner from where I live....

All manner of seemingly worthless objects are integral to the work of Steven Wright. 

Largely sculptural and nearly always with an added bumpy dimension simply because of the nature of his chosen medium, his work explores the notion of more is more. Very much reminiscent of Mexican and folk art, the work is vibrant, exciting and mad, he says he is very much inspired by 'spiritual, iconographic and religious significance of the Folk Art object'.

There is a small gallery space in Brixton village showcasing some of his pieces but more excitingly his Dulwich home (bequeathed to the National Trust) is open to visitors by appointment. His home is named: 'The House of Dreams', but I can tell you - I'm not sure how comfortable I'd rest at night if I had some of these images behind the old eyelids....I am going to pop round one afternoon on the way home from Sainsburys and tell him he's bonkers and I love his work.

Yes Steven - like that one I do most Sunday mornings past your house on the way to Sainsburys .

Musical Jelly

Following my future trend prediction about Jelly - I've found this : Noisy Jelly is a project by Raphaël Pluvinage and Marianne Cauvard, two students at L’Ensci Les Ateliers. They experiment with agar agar jellies, placed upon sensors that convert their vibrations into music with the help of arduino processing. - I rinsed this explanation from their PDF of the whole project which you can view or download here

This website is excellent - an online emporium of great illustration, type and photography. Pick Me Up is back at Somerset House - an excellent and affordable art fair, with contemporary cheap prints to snap up and 'have a go' bits and bobs. Artist in residence last year was Rob Ryan which was great as he's a personal favourite and I got to see him cutting out tiny fiddly bits of paper LIVE!  tickets are still available to buy starts 22nd...

Maddie the coonhound.

I want a coonhound! Look at how versatile they are.
Photographer  Theron 'This Wild Idea' Humphrey adopted Maddie 2 years ago and after having her by his side for most of his shoots and general photgraph taking decided to turn the camera on her. see all the photos here

Theron is currently on a 365 day tour of the states for a separate project.
Each day of the year he will take a single portrait snapshot of someone along with recording an interesting annecdotal story / full on life biog for each person.

JKR - Champions of Design

Rome in a day and a half.

and the photojournalist Steve McCurry exhibition at the Museum d'Art Contemporanea Roma. I'll admit that I hadn't heard of him before - but his work is well known around the world and featured regularly in National Geographic. If this exhibit comes to London - or you pop over for a day in Rome - then go!

Chromatic Typewriter.

Washington-based painter Tyree Callahan modified a 1937 Underwood Standard typewriter, replacing the letters and keys with color pads and hued labels to create a functional “painting” device called the Chromatic Typewriter.

Barbican Crimper Shop open.

Barbican shop is open as usual but now alongside 'The Den' which showcases new and unique bits and bobs from British design talent so ideal for an unusual stylish present. The christmas indoor market starting in the first week of December (as it should be) but expect glitter and standard stuff. Started my crimper shopping this weekend, I hate Oxford Circus at the best of times but now it's teeming with slow stomping out of towners desperate to get their baubles. Got one present! grrr.

Wild Wood

Wild Wood designed by my friend Sarah Pidgeon at Pearlfisher went down very nicely with my bargain and delicious beef roast at New Gallery Camberwell. Sarah's now left to go travelling for a few months and I'm freelancing at Pearlfisher which is ace bananas. Here's me (working very, very hard with a serious face to prove it) and Jamie wearing 'restart' t-shirts for someone's leaving do.

National Gallery.

Outside the National Gallery last weekend- they are growing a living version of Van Gogh's Wheat Field with Cypresses. Well done very interesting.
